Steelers training camp has arrived and summer is now officially over! While August is upon us and will be here Sunday, training camp means the beginning of the end of summer. This means the regular season will not be far behind and with it, autumn. It is been more than worth the wait.

Sunday, August 29 – Steelers at Denver, 8:00 p.m.
Thursday, September 2 – Carolina at Steelers, 7:30 p.m.
Sports Beat will continue to offer insight throughout camp, the preseason, and of course the regular season. We will continue with our pick of the week and our upset special. The Steelers, as well as our colleges (Pitt, Penn State, West Virginia, and Ohio State, among others) will also receive proper coverage on these pages.
As has been mentioned, this is going to be one of the most intriguing seasons, and camps, in Steeler history. Many questions need to be answered during the three weeks in Latrobe, as well as the remainder of the preseason, and when the season starts September 12. We will be following this every step of the way and give you our best analysis. Are the Steelers Super Bowl bound? Or are they treading water and hoping to finish just above .500? Those questions, and more, will be answered as the 2010 season unfolds.
(The Steelers officially signed coach Mike Tomlin to 2-year extension with an option for 2013 season)
*The Pirates are playing with our feelings and our imagination, now that the kids who have been called up are starting to produce and getting used to major league pitching. However, after 18 years of futility, one is extremely cautious not to let our imagine run away from us in the hopes that maybe, just maybe, this is a sign of things to come. I have stated that I want to give these kids a chance, and I will. But the organization still has left much doubt in my mind due to its penchant for selling off players to avoid paying large salaries.
In these parts, baseball season ends when the Steelers go to camp. It will likely be the same this year, since the Pirates are into the 50 loss plateau. This might be good for the kids to keep producing without having the spotlight on them while the Steelers take our attention away. Finish the season, and get a fresh start for 2011.
*Our sympathies to Bill Cowher and his three daughters for the loss of their wife and mother, Kaye, last week. May Kaye rest in peace.
*Our sympathies to the family of John Barbero, public address announcer for three decades at the Civic/Mellon Arena for the Pittsburgh Penguins. For those not in the know, Barbero was the voice behind the goals scored by the players, then gave their names and added a twist during his announcement. May John rest in peace.
